SCIATICA RESEARCH CENTER

Helping You Understand and Heal From Sciatica

An estimated 1%-5% of the population in the U.S. experiences sciatica every year, and up to 40% will get it at some point during their lifetimes. This relatively common experience is painful and often debilitating. Sciatica Research Center provides resources to help you understand the source of your symptoms and offers treatment options to get you back to a pain-free life.

Welcome

What is Sciatica?

The sciatic is a nerve that begins in your lower back and runs through your buttocks and down your leg. You have one on each side of your body, but most people only experience sciatica on one side. This nerve is the thickest and longest in the body. Sciatica refers to pain from irritation or injury along the sciatic nerve.

Sciatica isn’t a medical condition. Instead, it describes nerve pain originating from an underlying injury or condition. Most often, the cause is a pinched or compressed nerve from a herniated disc or bone spur in the lumbar region of the spine. The pressure on the sciatic leads to inflammation.

Do You Have These Sciatica Symptoms?

Sciatica Research Center understands how challenging back pain can be. It can interfere with your whole life, interrupting sleep and making it difficult to complete your daily activities. Not all lower back pain is sciatica. Understanding sciatica symptoms enables you to determine what steps to take for recovery. Symptoms include:

Shooting Pain

Shooting pain or a burning sensation in the lower back or buttock that may radiate down the leg, sometimes all the way to the feet

Numbness

Numbness or tingling along the back of the leg

Weakness

A feeling of weakness or heaviness in the leg

Pain When Moving

A worsening of pain symptoms when bending or twisting the spine, standing up, sitting, lying down, etc

Pins & Needles

Pins & needles (tingling) feeling throughout your legs, feet, or toes

Generally, these symptoms occur only on one side, though rarely does someone experience sciatica in both legs.

You may not experience all symptoms, and the severity can range from mild to severe. Pain also tends to worsen after long periods of inactivity.
